Prof. Ashok Kumar Ganguli

Director, IISER Berhampur

Professor Ashok Kumar Ganguli took over the charge of the Director of IISER Berhampur on May 2, 2023.
He held the Prof N K Jha Chair in the Department of Chemistry at IIT Delhi and was a Joint Professor in the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering. He has earlier held the positions of Deputy Director, IIT Delhi, Institute Chair Professor, and Head of Chemistry Department. He was the founding Director of the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (Mohali, India). His primary interest is in the area of the design of new materials, especially nanomaterials for energy conversion and superconducting materials.
He has published over 350 papers and five patents. He had his early education at the University of Delhi, a PhD in solid state chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and then worked in industry (Dupont USA) and the US National Lab (Ames Lab, Iowa) before joining IIT Delhi. He is the recipient of several awards and honours. Among them are the Chemical Research Society of India Silver Medal, the National Award of Nano Science and Nanotechnology (DST, Govt. of India), and the Distinguished Materials Scientist of the Year (2021) Award by the Materials Research Society of India.
He is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, India, the Royal Society of Chemistry (London), and the Asia-Pacific Association of Materials. Dr Ganguli was keenly involved in the formation of the Delhi S&T Cluster (DRIIV), (which is now a section 8 company) as part of the city cluster initiative by the office of the PSA, Govt of India, and was also a founding member of the Chandigarh region innovation and knowledge cluster (CRIKC).
Dr Ganguli is very keen to promote outreach activities for underprivileged sections of society and has visited remote schools and colleges in several states in the country.
